How to get access to GPT-4 right now
Generative AI giant OpenAI unleashed its newest product on the world Tuesday. GPT-4, the next-generation large language model, a step up from the one that took the world by storm in the form of ChatGPT, is out.But unlike with ChatGPT's launch last November, this isn't just a web app anyone can try out for free.
What is GPT-4?
Given that ChatGPT only recently launched in late last year, if you're unsure how we arrived at number 4 already, let me provide some clarification first: Since 2018, OpenAI has been disseminating GPT language models. The most cutting-edge model was GPT-3, the third such release, when ChatGPT, its chatbot product, was launched in 2022. Although Open AI's GPT-4 is the newest and most potent large language model, if you only have access to ChatGPT for free, you'll still be engaging with the GPT-3 model. (Well, GPT-3.5 if you want to get technical).
How can I access GPT-4 with ChatGPT+
The GPT-4 model requires a paid subscription to ChatGPT+, the premium edition of ChatGPT, in order to generate text at will. This is how to obtain that:
GPT-4 is the model being used by ChatGPT, but only if you're a premium member with access to ChatGPT+, as stated on OpenAI's announcement website for GPT-4. (sometimes styled "ChatGPT Plus"). The button on that page will take you straight to ChatGPT if you're signed into your OpenAI account, and if you're a paying ChatGPT+ user, that's it. A great time!

Once you've made a purchase, ChatGPT will grant you instant access to the new model. No waiting queue for you.
You will have the choice to use one of the older models or GPT-4 when beginning a new chat in a pulldown menu. Given the significant performance disparity between GPT-4 and the others, you should pay attention to OpenAI's caution.

You might receive a prompt to transition to GPT-4 if you're currently using ChatGPT. If you do, a text bar stating that "The previous model used in this conversation is unavailable" will be added to the center of your current chat. You are now using the most recent preset model. Older outputs that used GPT-3 will have the previous OpenAI emblem to their left, which is green; newer outputs that use GPT-4 will have the new OpenAI logo, which is black.
How to access GPT-4 for free
Currently, ChatGPT's free version cannot reach GPT-4.
Millions of Bing users, however, can already access the new Bing chatbot. If you're in that select group, Microsoft has confirmed that GPT-4 is already powering your chatbot interactions.
And soon, you may soon have no choice but to use GPT-4 in your everyday life, because according to OpenAI's blog post about its uses, GPT-4 is already being put to use by clients as diverse as Khan Academy, Stripe, Morgan Stanley, and the government of Iceland. In other words, there's a good chance you're going to be interacting with GPT-4 soon, whether you like it or not.
